Hospital Navigation in Practice
How Paadha collaborated with institutional stakeholders at Government Medical College Kozhikode to make complex hospital corridors easier to navigate for patients and bystanders.

Government Medical College, Kozhikode
Established in 1957, GMC Kozhikode is one of the premier tertiary healthcare centers and medical colleges in Kerala, providing care to thousands of patients across northern Kerala and neighboring states every single day.
The Navigation Challenge
As an expanding tertiary medical college with several multi-story blocks, high daily patient footfall, and intricate inter-departmental connections, navigating the hospital campus presents genuine challenges.
Patients and their accompanying bystanders often arrive during moments of distress and fatigue. Finding outpatient consultation rooms, sample collection labs, radiology suites, blood bank services, and pharmacies frequently involved stopping busy medical staff, attendants, and security guards for directions.
The Solution Approach
Paadha was developed as a direct response to this human challenge. The team engineered an instant-launch, responsive indoor navigation application tailored for fast, reliable mobile access without barrier.
- check_circleArchitectural Mapping: Converted available hospital floor plans into high-contrast, clean 2D vector maps tailored for mobile readability.
- check_circleCorridor Trajectory Validation: Conducted physical ground audits of corridors, elevator lobbies, and wing access points alongside facility coordinators.
- check_circleZero-Barrier QR Deployment: Placed QR checkpoints at key gates and entry points allowing visitors to launch their current location in one scan.
Actual Mapped Coverage & Scope
The initial project scope centered around critical visitor touchpoints across core hospital wings:
Specialty clinics, registration counters, waiting zones, and consultation suites.
Clinical pathology labs, ultrasound imaging, ECG, and diagnostic report counters.
Central blood bank, donor stations, emergency triage desk, and 24/7 dispensaries.
Designated passenger elevator banks, central stairwells, and public restrooms.
Live Wayfinding Interface in Practice
The live Paadha application provides patients and visitors with high-contrast corridor maps, quick destination chips (Main Entrance, Canteen, Blood Bank), multi-floor level controls (Basement, Ground, Level 1), and step-by-step route directions.

Deployment Learnings & Institutional Impact
Frictionless Access is Essential: In high-volume public hospitals, immediate access is crucial. Instant QR launching enabled visitors of all technical comfort levels to open the navigation application immediately without setup friction.
Search Synonyms Matter:Patients rarely search for official departmental abbreviations like "CP Pathology". Enabling colloquial search terms such as "Blood Test" and doctor specialties dramatically enhanced search success.
Maintenance Workflows Keep Maps Trustworthy: A digital map is only as valuable as its accuracy. Having designated administrative contact for room changes ensures the digital guide stays aligned with the physical hospital.
